Kovatchev's retrospective exhibition

Benalmádena takes us to the land of fantastic realism, featuring etchings by the Bulgarian artist.

The Benalmádena Centro de Exposiciones (Exhibition Centre) is running a retrospective exhibition gathering works by Bulgarian artist Valentín Kovatchev, through 16 September. The art show features 125 artworks dated 1959 to 2007. The exhibit contains drawings, xylographs, dry point prints, etchings, watercolours and oil paintings.

Born in 1953, Kovatchev felt strongly attracted to the art of drawing early in his life. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, specialising in engraving. In 1987, he invented the etching technique, which earned him international renown. He doesn't draw any sketches and he prints his work himself.

Kovatchev's perspective -suggestive of dreams- recalls Dalí's, and some experts call his style 'fantastic realism' -his drawings show why it's been called this way. His etchings, however, are made with great attention to details. Mythology, bulls, horses... these are the themes the artist represents from his particular point of view.

The exhibition includes an interesting documentary on the Bulgarian artist and the art of engraving.

Moon nights at the Beach

Time for flamenco, with the Juan A. Pérez company's new show.

On Friday 3 August, Juan A. Pérez's flamenco company will be performing on La Cala Sea Promenade, next to the Tower, in the context of the Moon on the Beach Nights programme. The company's latest show 'Mediterráneo' (Mediterranean), starting at 10 p.m., will surely surprise the Mijas audience.

'Mediterráneo' is an original flamenco show featuring Casta Huarochiri's musicians and Azabache's dancers. The background for their performance will be made up of Federico García Lorca's poems and Joan Manuel Serrat's 'Mediterráneo' song.

Directed and choreographed by Juan A. Pérez, the show includes three flamenco acts. It is also expected to feature guest artists, gathering out of their love of both flamenco and the town.

As if the show weren't good enough, the setting is charming: next to the sea that washes the coast of Mijas and in the moonlight. Could there be a better atmosphere to sit down an enjoy different flamenco styles?

TRADITIONS AND FIESTAS

'Pescaíto' Day in La Carihuela: A lot of local flavour

The town of Torremolinos is celebrating the 20th edition of this food fiesta.

Born as a day to celebrate the richness and strong character of local food, the 'Día del Pescaíto' (Fried Fish Day) has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Torremolinos. Last year, 35,000 people got together in the district of La Carihuela on this day. The organisers expect this 20th edition to draw even more visitors on 14 June.

Being a coastal district, La Carihuela is the ideal place to pay homage to 'pescaíto' (literally, 'little fish'), the hallmark of the whole area from El Saltillo to El Bajondillo, where all the establishments involved in this event are located.

Tasting venues will have a special role on the 'Pescaíto' Day, but they won't be the only activity: Young women in flounced dresses will present local villagers and out-of-town visitors with flowers, and there'll be Andalusian dance performances by local dance students.

Moreover, the 'Pescaíto' Day will also attract important figures in the town, who'll be welcomed by the Traders and Shopkeepers' Association of La Carihuela-Montemar. In sum, the day promises a lot of local flavour and colour.

Exhibition of Museo Torrijos in Alhaurin de la Torre

"Museo Torrijos", exhibited in Alhaurín de la Torre

A tribute to the brave General and his men, 175 years after their execution.

In 1931, on the 100th anniversary of Torrijos and his men's death, Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País organised a series of events including the opening of a museum devoted to Torrijos, containing different items, letters and valuable historic documents.

Years later, in 2006, "Torrijos por la Libertad" Association recovered the homage paid several decades before through a small exhibition including items from the association's large historic archives. The exhibition, which showcased even weapons and revisited the General's life, will be run again from 23 to 30 March at Finca El Portón, in Alhaurín de la Torre.

The initiative was announced simultaneously with the writing of the draft for the construction of the "General Torrijos" Museum, in Alhaurín de la Torre, whose edifice will be built in Paraje de Torrealquería, in the district of Viñagrande.

José María de Torrijos and some of his followers were executed by firing squad on San Andrés Beach, Málaga, on December 11th, 1831. They will be always remembered because they bravely attempted to restore liberties and the Constitution in our country during one of the most disastrous reigns in Spanish history, that of Ferdinand VII.

Santiago Sierra 26 May - 13 August 2006

CAC Málaga presents Santiago Sierra’s first solo exhibition at a Spanish art centre or museum. Sierra is the only Spaniard in the hundred most influential artists in the world according to Capital magazine. The show features a total of 1,354 black and white photographs, seven videos, a psychophony, jewels and other works illustrating the creative process behind the last four interventions in this artist’s professional career: The Corridor in the House of the People (Bucharest, Rumania, 2005), 245 m3 (Stommeln, Germany, 2006), The Punished (Frankfurt, Germany, 2006) and Jewellery Collection (Madrid, Spain, 2006). The exhibition, directed by Fernando Francés and curated by Helena Juncosa, is wholly produced by CAC Málaga itself.

The most controversial artist of the day leaves no one indifferent. His courage leads him to confront such issues as prostitution, immigration, poverty, racism, violence and war in places where their meaning takes on singular nuances.

Exposition of Jason Rhoades at CAC Malaga

Jason Rhoades

CAC Málaga presents the first solo exhibition in a Spanish art centre or museum by the Californian artist Jason Rhoades. Tijuanatanjerchandelier is a site-specific project for the CAC Málaga centre that continues the themes of Rhoades’ previous work, principally focusing on the exploration of the mixture of cultures and female sexuality through hundreds of objects and neon lights that take over the exhibition space completely. The programme for the official opening of the project, is directed by Fernando Francés, curated by Helena Juncosa and produced exclusively for Málaga’s Centre for Contemporary Art, will include a performance.

Jason Rhoades has created an exhibition based on the final part of his trilogy especially for CAC Málaga. In it, the Californian artist constructs a universe bringing together symbols and icons from different cultures and religions which find their nexus in four frontier cities and towns: Tijuana (Mexico), Tangiers (Morocco), Los Angeles (United States) and Málaga (Spain). These connections are brought out through an odd jumble of objects and coloured neon signs spelling out different names given to the vagina in Spanish and English, illustrating the linguistic and cultural wealth in the Anglo-Latin territories. Rhoades has made a list of more than 7,000 expressions in his quest to compile an inventory of terminology for referring to the vagina. Of these, some 300 expressions are in Spanish, and many of these can be admired in the project the artist has created for CAC Málaga.
